Native Design Language

The Native Design Language (NDL) is American Express’ native mobile app design system. It is maintained by a core group of designers who work closely with writers and engineers to create guidelines for the components and patterns that make up our app.

Task flows and titles were often a source of uncertainty and inconsistency for our team. In order to standardize these related patterns, I performed an audit of our app and designs that were currently in flight. Working with our UX writer, I came up with a set of guidelines, presented them to our engineers, and worked closely with them to design around technical constraints.

This documentation was published in the NDL and is used by the entire mobile design and engineering teams. It allows our designers to work more efficiently while empowering them to solve for the big problems without stressing the small stuff.
